Devil Inks

For some reason I decided to ink this piece with a brush only. (Border not included in that statement.) Turned out okay I think. Colors to follow hopefully tonight...

Well...since you asked, yeah. I admit it. The brush felt real good. Are you happy, Todd?

Thanks. It was fun and I even woke up early to finish it this morning. Gonna take my time coloring as the deadline is now the 11th, so's I'm not rushing it. May give it a cover treatment like I did with Mafus' Nova entry a ways back.

This looks really, really good. In case you don't know I give lame compliments. But I really like the changes - not that it didn't look great before. Awesome.

i agree with mr. todd there. this came out really cool man! i tried to ink with a brush once and failed it miserably. i now stick to pens, i just didn't have the hand for it. but this came out fantastic! give the brushes a whirl again, i'd like to see more from ya!

Thanks Rene and Heywood.

The brush used to be kind of a fascination of mine that I could never seem to get a handle on. I'd always end up with a shaky line, which led to my going back to markers and the occasional quill. Watching the Kubert DVD over and made me realize I was holding it wrong and that it's much easier to have the line go away from you. If you're bringing the brush/marker/quill towards you you don't get the best line. (Arm restriction or something I reckon.)

Toying with the idea of giving this piece away, if anyone is interested, too.

Hmmmm....sounds interesting. I really need to pick up some of the matrial out there about inking. There's a book by Klaus Jansen and I just saw another one the other day at the comic book shop. That dvd sounds like it would be cool to check out as well. As for the piece, I think it'd would be pretty cool to have meself. I could throw something your way for it?

Mafus has that Klaus book and loaned it to me many moons ago. From what I remember it has a wealth of knowledge that I probably need to buy myownself.

On the Klaus tip...a guy I used to work with was an intern at Marvel and was a runner for them to Klaus. He got to go hang with Mr. Jansen on a weekly basis, lucky bastid.

Just e-mail me your address Heywood and I'll ship it your way. No compensation required.

I remember my first attempt at inking with a brush. Splurged on a WN series 7 (when I was broke) and sat down to ink a drawing I'd done. I delicately touched moved the brush across the paper and...SPLAT! I thought, "People ink with these!!? What the hell!" Then a couple years ago I saw someone at Heroes...Dexter Vines, I think, inking these razor thin lines with a brush. Made me want to shoot myself in the head.
